PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant has passed former teammate Shaquille O’Neal and moved into fifth place on the NBA’s career scoring list.

Bryant needed 24 points to pass O’Neal entering Monday night’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers. O’Neal retired with 28,596 points. Bryant nailed a long jumper late in the first half to give him 24 points.

O’Neal and Bryant often clashed, even while leading the Lakers to NBA championships in 2000, 2001 and 2002.

Bryant was loudly booed in pregame introductions. Bryant graduated from Lower Merion High School just outside of Philly and has been jeered by Sixers fans for the majority of his career.

A little info on the Superbowl from ESPN.

INDIANAPOLIS — Let’s forget about the trash talk and salsa dancing and potential legacies, and let’s get down to some real football: Giants vs. Patriots, Super Bowl XLVI.

Two well-respected scouts spoke to ESPNNewYork.com on the condition of anonymity, offering their takes on the matchup. Here’s a sampling of their comments:

“The Giants’ ability to stay score-for-score with New England is of great importance; it helps expose the deficiencies in the New England defense. If you fall too far behind, it changes everything … I really liked New England’s inside pass rush against (Joe) Flacco in the championship game; it was better than previous weeks. That’s where you want to pressure Eli Manning, up the middle … In the San Francisco game, I saw some problems with the Giants’ offensive line, especially up the middle. They really struggled with San Francisco’s big people. Eli got hit a lot in that game.

“New England has an inside passing offense, with the two tight ends, (Wes) Welker and (Danny) Woodhead. (Deion) Branch is competent on the outside, but it’s mostly an inside attack. That’s an interesting matchup because the Giants have the perimeter element to their pass coverage, but can they cover inside? How the Giants match up in their nickel defense will be an interesting matchup to watch.

“If you show Tom Brady something twice, he’ll get a good bead on it. You have to disguise pressure, feign pressure, disguise your intentions. Baltimore really kept Tom on his toes. That’s what the Giants have to do … The Giants’ three-receiver package is going to be a hard matchup for the Patriots. (Victor) Cruz and (Hakeem) Nicks are very good, especially after the catch, and (Mario) Manningham has come on a little bit. New England has to be thinking long and hard about how they’re counter to defend Cruz and Nicks. (Bill) Belichick is great at taking away one thing from your offense, but the Giants have more than one thing.

“Both teams have faced adversity. The Giants have weathered a lot of storms, and they’ve perfected that ‘Next-Man Up’ mentality. New England has done it with smoke and mirrors on defense. Hell of a coaching job … This is going to be a fourth-quarter game. I’ll give a slight edge to the Giants. They’ve won the hard way, they’ve won on the road. New England hasn’t had too many quality opponents, and New England almost got beat at home. If Lee Evans makes that catch, they’re not even here.”
